My Thanksgiving Wine Picks

Roger Bissell Thanksgiving Wine Picks
My Thanksgiving Wine Picks: When it comes to the rich and savory dishes that often find their way onto our tables for Thanksgiving, there are two wines from Barolo that would be a perfect fit.

PICK ONE: Azelia Dolcetto D Alba Bricco Dell’ Oriolo 2019

The Azelia winery which is the Scavino family, consists of Luigi and his son Lorenzo, representing the fifth generation, has been producing wine in the Langhe for over 100 years. The vineyards for this Dolcetto are in Montelupo Albese in the Alta Langa and are the oldest of all their vineyards. This dolcetto is a red wine bursting with soft velvety tannins and complex notes. On the palate it is rich and ripe with notes of plum, blackberry and lush dark cherry. You will also find cloves in the wine; the wonderful structure will create a perfect marriage between the fat from your turkey and potatoes.

I personally have always enjoyed sitting down with the Scavino family to discuss their continued commitment to producing excellent wines that speak of their land. Lorenzo is one of the bright young stars in Barolo that represents a bridge between the older generations and the new. Look to him in the future to see how he helps lead a great younger generation of winemakers in the Langhe. Bravo Lorenzo!! PURCHASE HERE

PICK TWO: Deltetto Alta Langa Brut 2017

This Alta Langa makes a perfect pairing partner for every single dish you will find on your Thanksgiving plate. Since 1953, the Deltetto family in Canale have been stalwarts of the Roero and Alta Langa wine scene. They were originally one of the first champions of Arneis, a local white indigenous variety to Roero which was nearly extinct until Luca Corrado of Vietti spearheaded its revival along with a few other famous families. Today, the Deltetto family (which consists of Tony and Graziela and their children Carlo, Cristina and Claudia) have grown their annual production to be a formidable sized winery in the Roero region.

Roger Bissell Thanksgiving Wine Picks From Barolo Piemonte

The refreshing cleansing acidity found in their tiny perlage will create a perfect see-saw balance in your mouth between your food and wine this holiday season. This pick is just bursting with minerals, grapefruit, green apples and citrus notes but with such a creamy finish. Alta Langa is the future of Piemonte. Cristina and Claudia are among some of the most welcoming people in all of Piemonte. They are continually growing their family business in a sustainable way; but  simultaneously adhering to the moral standards that their family instilled in them a long time ago. It is always a pleasure to visit with these sisters who are benchmarks for a life to lead. This is currently sold out, but never fear!
